QB Competition Heating Up

With the dog days of August around the corner, Taft's soon to be Junior QB, "Bam" Goodall (top left), is feeling the heat from Nicholas Stephen who recently transferred back to T-HOUSE from Dorsey. With passing leagues in full swing, who will lead the TOREADORS becomes the big question heading into the Fall.

D.J. Morgan Named State's Top Sophomore Athlete

Taft Football & Track athlete, D.J. Morgan, has been selected the boys' State Sophomore Athlete of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports, beating out another outstanding area 10th-grader, Malcolm Jones of Oaks Christian. Morgan, who took second in the state in the 110-meter hurdles in a lifetime-best 14.19 seconds, won City Section titles in the 100-meter dash, 110 and 300 hurdles. He also won the 110 and 400 hurdles in the intermediate boys' division at the U.S. Track and Field Youth Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, N.C. in June.

July 10, 2008: Steve Smith (Taft/USC/N.Y. Giants) looks on as Taft coach Matt Kerstetter unveils Smith's game jersey jersey that will hang on the weight room "Wall of Fame" where past Taft greats are celebrated.

Combine News: Scout/UnderArmour Combine




Taft athletes represented well in late May as they participated in the UnderArmour/Scout.Com Combine down at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Participants were by invite only and included Nick Bruce, Oliver Johnson, Anthony Ascencio, Antwuan Woods, Kalan Booker, Antuan "Bam" Goodall, Devon Rosa, Nicholas Stephen, & Wesley Bates. Antwaun Woods (pictured right) was the only Freshman (2011) named to the "All Underclassmen" team, and Nick Bruce (2009 - left)was named "All Combine 2nd Team".

D.J. Morgan was crowned "King of the Combine" posting some ridiculous numbers including a 4.42 40 and a 4.28 shuttle. Freshman OL/DL Antwaun Woods (2011 - pictured) was awarded "Freshman MVP" honors. Antuan “Bam” Goodall (2010), and Christian Hayes (2011) also impressed as all 4 were invited to the Elite 100 on the East Coast to be held in New Jersey this summer.

We proudly congratulate a few Taft Alums who may have their NFL dreams realized this year : Justin Tryon - DB/Arizona State (Taft Football 2001) was chosen in the 4th Rd by the Washington Redskins, Paul Pratt - DB/Nevada (Taft Football 2001-02) is a free agent pickup by the New York Jets, and WR Brandan Anson (Taft 2003) is camping with the Cincinatti Bengals after finishing his college career with Div. 2 Minnesota Duluth.
